about

Sugarcoat is the oldest of the five songs on Colours, and probably the one written from the place of greatest insecurity. The songs on the EP converge thematically around the challenges of being yourself, and this one really focuses on how hard that can be in romantic relationships. I wrote it in the early stages of one in which I really felt, as I suppose I have in a number of relationships past, that the other person was much more enamoured with their own idea of me rather than with who I really was.

lyrics

Here I am, where I fell
And where you found me
You think I'm special, I can tell
And so you've claimed me

Oh but I can see myself reflected in your eyes
You don't see the broken parts, you don't realise

'Cause you've wrapped me in your sugarcoat
And now you think you love me

I've been making bad choices for a while
Been trying to find an escape from my old lifestyle
And I'd gotten so tired from having to stay strong
I was at my breaking point when you came along

And you wrap me in your sugarcoat
And I pull it tight against the cold
'Cause here underneath your sugarcoat
I don't think you know me

Well here I am, where I fell
And you pick me up and tell me I'm perfect

So how do I explain, there's more here than what you see
And you might not feel that way if you knew all of me

'Cause you've wrapped me in your sugarcoat
And I never could handle the cold
But here, underneath your sugarcoat
I just hope you like me

Well here I am, where I fell
