I wrote Colours in 2017 – the year I turned 30. I had spent my first decade of adulthood doing the things that I thought I was supposed to do – earning promotions, ironing clothes, spending too much on overseas holidays because I was burnt out from working too hard... But I had made myself quite sick and miserable, and it was only as that milestone birthday approached that I really took a step back and realised that I was just fundamentally unhappy with the way I was spending my time. I did, eventually, make some really big changes in my life, and ultimately quit full-time work to focus on music. So in that context it was quite fitting that this song ended up being my debut single and the title track off my first EP.
